All is Calm, All is Bright

Today is the first Sunday of Advent.
I have spent the last week painting a 2’ x 4’ canvas that will be enlarged by a company into an
8’x 16’ banner that will serve as a backdrop for the Christmas Eve program at our church.
It’s called “All is Calm, All is Bright”. It’s Bethlehem just before the star emerges and
Christ enters the world. I hope you have a wonderful season.

This year I revisited the theme of the Angels appearing to the Shepherds. These are the results. How wonderful to contemplate that pivotal moment in history. There isn't a Star described in Luke, but over the years the star has become linked with this occasion. Matthew tells of the Magi and the Star, but not the Angels and Shepherds. The salvation story is a mystery.

ADVENT CANDLE MATS

I may have had an original thought! I made 12" Friendship Star quilt blocks to be Advent candle mats. They could be a variation on the traditional Advent candle wreath. (I used the candles I had rather than the traditional purple and pink tapers) I'll sell them at the Handworks Art Sale which is Nov 4 from 9-4 at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church.

If you're interested in making one, I'll publish the process when I have time to edit the pictures.

This is an assortment of images I've created with an Advent, Christmas and Epiphany theme. I'm honored when churches ask to use my images and I am happy to share them. However, as it says in Luke 10:7    "the laborer is worthy of their hire" and is repeated in 1 Timothy 5:18, "The worker deserves their  pay." Girl's Club Advent project.

The 10 inch square drawings with painted enhancements were done on silver tissue. These were "quilted" together with a sandwich of tissue paper, netting, the girl's drawings and a heavy dose of a gloss polymer medium mixture and then pressure (kind of like a panini). And then I added my own flourishes. This has been an intense process of figuring and doing math and prep work. The number of squares was a variable because of attendance in the 3 sessions and it came out exactly right! Thanks be to God!

These pieces of my work are part of a show for Advent at Shawnee Park CRC behind GR Christian High. It was put on by Robin Jensen (who was my first formal art teacher when I went to Calvin College).

These pieces of Advent art are on display at Calvin CRC in Grand Rapids on Ethel and Thomas SE from now until the beginning ofFebruary. The show ranges from icons to realistic interpretations to abstractions, all telling and celebrating the story of the birth of Christ in some way.
